The ultimate guide to identifying John Deere PowerTech Engines.
Not many Powertech engine parts are interchangeable with the older John Deere engines. So it is vital to distinguish the PowerTech series of John Deere diesel engines from the John Deere 300 series engines to ensure you order the correct parts.
The John Deere PowerTech engines share the same model designations as the 300 series but have different component parts that are not all interchangeable.
There are a number of pointers to help identify whether you have a Powertech or Liter designated 300 series engines:
- The easiest way to identify your engine is to look on the valve cover for a “PowerTech.” sticker. if you are lucky it is still intact and legible.
- The Engine Serial Number tag
The engine serial number can be either a one-line, or a two-line style. On either style if the number ends with a 150 or higher it is a “Powertech” engine.
- The front engine mounts have an “L” shape bolt pattern for 3 mounting capscrews. The mounts will be facing outward on both sides of the engine.
- The water pump is mounted on the right side in a low position integrated into the front cover.
- The nose of the crankshaft has four bolts for the crankshaft pulley.
- If the valve cover bolt holes run around the perimeter of the cover it is a Series 300 engine, if they run down the middle, it is a PowerTech engine.
- The fuel lift pump (fuel transfer pump) is located toward the rear of the engine instead of toward the front. The “front ” is the fan end regardless of which way it faces in the equipment its mounted in. On the 300 series engine the pump is located toward the front of the engine.

Despite a similar appearance of the Powertech and 300 series engines, many of the component parts are not interchangeable have been changed extensively including:

- Crankshaft
- Crankshaft bearings and thrust bearings
- Connecting rods and bearings
- Camshaft
- Balancer shafts
- Pistons and liners
- Flywheels
- Valve covers
- Thermostat housings
