Ferguson TED20 - Fitting the Timing Gear Video tutorial

Whilst timing gears are durable and accurate they do not usually last the life time of your tractor. Timing gears are engaged every time you start your tractor and remain in use until your tractor is turned off. The timing gears allow the camshaft and crankshaft to turn the timing chain – so the accuracy of timing gears is essential to the smooth running of the pistons and intake and exhaust valves.

Over their lifetime timing gears can fail due to heavy usage or can become chipped and damaged.  If the timing gears fail the intake valves will be unable to open and close, trapping exhaust gases inside the piston cylinder. Timing gear failure can also result in the engine running rough and backfiring or even failing to run. When the timing gears are not running accurately the ignition timing will also be inaccurate because the spark plugs are not being fired in time, or in the correct sequence – this can eventually lead to engine failure.

In this video Gordon takes us through the process of fitting the timing gear on his Ferguson TED20.

'Fitting the timing sprockets, chain and associated gear. There are a few things to think about when doing this job, but it's not difficult. We step through it and talk through how to get the timing set up after installing a new crankshaft and without the valves to fitted to give you TDC.'.
