Ferguson TED20 - Fitting the Oil Filter Housing - Video Tutorial

As work progresses Gordon reaches the final stages of engine completion and in this video fits the oil filter housing.

'Finishing off some of the smaller items to finish off the engine. The oil filter housing confused us temporarily, but thank goodness for the manual! We also show in this video how we made a new fibre washer for the oil filter housing and some packing which we then didn't need. ;) In this video we used some gaskets from the Anglo Agriparts supplied gasket set (A43497) as well as the oil filter element (A63693).'

What is oil filter housing?

An oil filter housing is a bolt on adaptor to enable fitment of an engine oil filter the engine block.

A TED 20 uses a canister type filter, (typically found on older engines). This housing mounts the replaceable oil filter element (A63693) in a metal canister.  The filter housing includes a relief valve, to ensure that maximum oil pressure is not exceeded and a bypass valve.  A bypass valve allows oil to bypass the filter when the engine oil is cold and the viscosity is thicker, this avoids oil starvation on start up.

Why change the engine oil and filter?

Oil degrades over time and the TED 20 (like all TVO tractors) has a tenancy to dilute the engine oil with fuel.  Poor oil condition causes premature wear which will ultimately cause engine failure.  The filter will remove any debris and foreign bodies from the oil, the filter should be replaced along with the engine oil at the recommended service interval.

It is useful to remove the filter housing periodically to clean it thoroughly, the valves can be checked to ensure they are in good working condition.
