Ferguson TED20 - Dismantling The Rocker Arm - Video Tutorial

In this latest video Gordon takes us through the process of dismantling, cleaning and inspecting the rocker arm assembly on his Ferguson TED20.

'Time to work on the valve rocker assembly. First up dismantling, cleaning and inspection. Watch to see how we approach the disassembly and to see the things to look for. '

The rocker arm on an internal combustion engine is an oscillating lever that changes radial movement from the cam lobe into linear movement. The rocker arm (or reciprocating lever)  takes the spinning motion of the overhead camshaft and turns it into the linear movement that opens and closes the valves.

As the rotating camshaft lobe raises the outside of the arm, the inside presses down on the valve stem, opening the valve.  As one end is raised and lowered by the rotating lobe via a tappet and pushrod the other end works the valve stem allowing the valve to alternately open and close.

When should you change a rocker arm?

There are a number of indications of when you should change a rocker arm, which if ignored can lead to the arms getting stuck or failing to open and close valves.

  • Rapid Clicking or Ticking Noises
  • Poor Engine Performance or Stalling
  • Engine Warning Light On
  • Physical Deterioration

Why do rocker arms fail?

The life of a rocker arm can be prolonged with regular maintenance, a visual inspection will help you to avoid further damage if your rocker arm has deteriorated so it is important to check for the following:

  • Broken Valve Springs
  • Engine Overheating
  • Stuck Valves
  • Poor Lubrication
