The ring gear is fitted to the tractor flywheel, this is what the starter motor engages to start the engine.
These wear over time; the most common symptom of a worn ring gear is the starter motor running but failing to turn the engine over. If you can turn the engine over 1/4turn manually, retry the key and it starts. The fault is almost certainly the ring gear.
