Serial Number? The Massey Ferguson 35 was produced in 1960 -1965. To identify
your serial number look on the dashboard of the Massey 35.
Over time and even with correctly adjusted foot brakes, the early handbrakes get to the point where they will no longer lock the brakes on.
The cause for this is wear at the bottom of the handbrake lever where it engages with the footbrake pedal as shown in this diagram.

There were two different type of brakes fitted to the Bradford built tractors. The B250 plus early B275 and B414 used a smaller 5 ½” disk while later models used the larger 6 ½” disks – the change probably occurred sometime around 1963/4.

A simple dynamo check is to disconnect both field and power connections ensuring that they don’t short to surrounding metalwork in case there is also a regulator fault. The tractor is started at low speed (about 600 RPM), the voltage between power and ground measured (typically often 2 to 4 volts), then the field and power terminals linked. The voltage should rise (possibly to around 8 or 9 volts.
